INTO AN INTROVERT’S MIND

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I think. Of course, as you might expect, I am someone who thinks a lot. Sometimes I am able to switch it off and put things or people into cupboards. My therapist tells me to stop thinking so much. I mean, I wish I could. I admire people who go through life and just do things. And once they’ve done them, they don’t think about them. How free your mind must be to think about useful things!

But I have found ways to switch off my brain. I love reading – especially about other people’s lives – because I lose all sense of mine. I delve into another world, into their thoughts, experiences, and forget mine. I like to surround myself with people who absorb knowledge like a sponge. Chatting about things and ideas helps me not be so focused about emotions. It’s like a distraction of the self. Running is another example. It clears the mind. As does art.

And last night, I realised, sometimes a senseless series or UFC fight can also do just that.
