POEM: WINTER'S GIANTS

through the mist,
through the trees,
proud buildings stand;
illuminated by soft midday
winter sunlight;
resilient against everything.

POEM: FATHER

I'm sitting here
as the African sun shines onto my desk,
and I think of my father.

My father was a man of faraway places,
of dusty roads,
blonde bleached hair.

POEM: VELVET SKY


Mountains collide with a velvet sky.
Stars dot the inky night
Like a tablecloth, god spread the heavens before us.

We sit, huddled,
Under a heavy duvet, on the porch,
Before Your creation.

Fluttering sunbirds have disappeared
And the night’s animals
Slinking around us, unawares.

You hold my hand, tightly,
Beneath my skin, your warmth,
Beating, vibrating heart, veins, pulse.

We are alive, in Your presence,
Lord our Father, our Creator.
Our eyes, upon You, upon your works.

​​Walking Home

small snowflakes are whipping my face
we walk together down the road
i to my apartment; you to the train station
together we talk
our silence punctuated with conversation
together we walk
our footsteps echoing on soft dark tar

POEM: 'OH, WILLIAM'


I visited the current William Kentridge installation, showing at the IZIKO National Art Gallery in town on a bright summer's day.

Perhaps it was the at first intimidatingly loud music, the rattling of the machine, or the quietness of the rest of the other exhibits, but when I came home I penned this poem.
